Rainy season in South Florida brings intense downpours, gusty winds, and a serious risk of water damage if your roof isn’t prepared. At Dan The Shingle Man Roofing, we know how quickly a small roof issue can turn into a costly repair, especially during back-to-back storms when roofers are already booked out.

Here are five things every homeowner should check right now:

  1. Missing or damaged shingles – Even one missing shingle can allow water to seep into the underlayment and decking. This can lead to hidden rot, insulation damage, and ceiling stains, all of which are expensive to fix if not caught early.

  2. Clogged or sagging gutters – Florida rainstorms can drop inches of water in just an hour. If your gutters are clogged or pulling away from the fascia, water can overflow and back up onto the roof, increasing the chance of leaks and wood rot.

  3. Visible water stains or ceiling spots – These are often signs of a small leak that has been dripping slowly over time. A leak doesn’t always show up during a sunny day, but those brownish water rings are your warning.

  4. Moss or algae growth – Algae and moss thrive in Florida’s humid climate, especially on north-facing roofs. Not only are they unsightly, but they retain moisture and can slowly degrade your shingles and reduce the roof’s lifespan.

  5. Old or brittle underlayment – If your roof is 15+ years old, chances are the underlayment, the waterproof layer beneath your shingles, is beginning to fail. Cracked or brittle underlayment is no match for Florida’s heavy rains.

Bonus Tip: Check around skylights, chimney flashing, and vent boots, these are common weak points for water intrusion.

Get ahead of the storms. We offer free roof inspections and fast repair scheduling to help keep your home safe and dry all season. Don’t wait for the rain to tell you your roof has a problem.
